This was the aftermath of a small water leak from the washing machine that went untreated for about a week.  Wet carpet that constantly gets wet is a birthplace for mold spores.  Even though the water only contaminated the carpet, the mold spores spread to the base of the wall and grew up the wall.  This is why it is best to deal with the disaster as soon as it happens, no matter how big or small.
